Repairing or rebuilding your vehicle's transmission is expensive. But it can cost you a lot more money if the work is not done at a reputable transmission shop. You can avoid being ripped off by thoroughly researching repair shops before making a commitment.

  1. Ask friends and family members for recommendations.
  2. Check out the most highly recommended shops on a consumer website such as Angie's List. Read reviews written by other consumers and make note of the top two or three shops.
  3. Look at the listings of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA) to ensure the shops that interest you are members. Member shops must comply with certain guidelines.
  4. Ask for worst case estimates from two or three shops. Choose the one that offers the best deal and feels most reliable. You may want to bring along a friend for support when you drop off the car
