ATF: What's Beneath the Cap?
Scott Halley, Ed Konzman, The Lubrizol Corporation
In this talk we will provide an overview of Automatic Transmission Fluids starting from crude extraction through to finished fluids and answer questions like: What is base oil? Where do the additives come from? Is there a difference between mineral and synthetics? In addition we will explore how the continuing evolution of transmission hardware changes the formulation and requirements for fluid.
What Are You Doing to Reduce Comebacks?
Bill Brayton, ATRA
This popular seminar/discussion forum is back again this year to bring techniques and procedures used by top builders and owners in the industry to reduce comebacks in their shops. There will be a panel of 4 rebuilders and shop owners there to discuss procedures they use on the common units and the exotic units that the transmission industry encounters. This seminar will look at late model transmission problem areas and methods used to solve these problems whether it is with a product or a procedure that the technicians created to solve their particular issue.
Let's Talk About Excitement, Drive and Devotion!
Lance Wiggins, ATRA
Lance will be introducing the latest improvements to the technical department and what features you have as a member of the association. The goal here is simple, "increase profits and reduce comebacks". Lance and the technical department have been pounding the pavement to bring you the latest fixes and information guaranteed to "Get 'em Out the Door".

Top Ten Ways to Botch a Diagnosis
Sean Boyle, Southern Illinois University
We’ve all been there. The transmission is apart on the bench and there’s nothing obvious or apparent that’s wrong. This all could have been avoided if a little diagnosis was performed before the remove-disassemble-inspect. In this seminar, we’ll discuss what works and what doesn’t concerning diagnostics.
• Learn when it’s worth doing pressure tests
• Don’t have a code? Learn logical methods of approaching diagnostics
• Learn to harness the power of your scan tool
Tips and Tricks from the Builder's Bench
John Parmenter, Precision International
Covering current repair cause diagnosis and repair jobs in the shop today will cover scan tool and diagnostic aids and their relationship to trouble codes.

6T40-6T45 Updates and Product Issues
Steve Garrett, ATRA
The 6T40 family of transaxles represent the most widely used transmission in the world today. The 6T40/45 applications have undergone massive changes for the 2012 model year. In this session, we will explore which models were updated, what the updates are, as well as the interchange issues with those changes. In addition we will explore the current product issues for the 6T40/45 applications.
The Road Less Traveled
Bob Warnke, Sonnax Industries
Separating Hydraulics from Electronics - an easy to understand rule to make your job easier. Follow Bob as he breaks down the simple-to-understand relationship between the hydraulics and the electronics. Then dig a little deeper to identify the hydraulic and/or electronic components that are causing the failures. Or the current failures on transmissions that are commonly misdiagnosed due to the lack of understanding the circuit. After this class you should be able to take it back to the shop with the confidence that you can fix anything.
