Transmission Service

Founded in 1954, ATRA is the oldest and largest transmission service organization in the world. As a trade association, ATRA doesn’t perform repairs or sell services directly—instead, it supports a network of professional member shops. That makes ATRA a trusted resource for consumers looking to better understand their options.

ATRA member shops offer a range of transmission services depending on your vehicle’s condition. Knowing what each service includes can help you make a more informed decision about maintaining or repairing your car or truck.

Transmission Service (Fluid Change)

A transmission service is part of routine maintenance—similar to changing your engine oil or coolant. Staying on top of regular service can help prevent more expensive repairs down the road.

As a general guideline, service is recommended every 24,000 miles or about every two years. Some manufacturers suggest longer intervals (50,000–100,000 miles), but more frequent service can help catch small issues before they become major problems.

A standard service typically replaces about one-third to one-half of the transmission fluid, which is usually sufficient for a well-maintained vehicle.

Transmission Flush (Fluid Exchange)

A transmission flush, also called a fluid exchange, replaces nearly all of the transmission fluid using specialized equipment. This process pushes new fluid through the system while removing the old fluid from the transmission and cooler lines.

One important note: many flush machines do not replace the transmission filter. If your vehicle has an accessible filter, it’s a good idea to have it replaced at the same time. In some vehicles, like many Hondas, the filter isn’t accessible without disassembling the transmission.

Whether you choose a standard service or a full flush often depends on the condition of your transmission fluid. It’s also important to use the correct type of fluid, as many modern transmissions require specific formulations. An ATRA member shop can help you determine what’s right for your vehicle.

Reseal Service

If your transmission is leaking but still operating properly, a reseal service may be the right solution. This process focuses on fixing external leaks without a full rebuild.

A reseal service typically includes:

  • Removing the transmission from the vehicle
  • Replacing external seals (which may require partial disassembly)
  • Reinstalling the transmission
  • Refilling with new fluid, making necessary adjustments, and road testing

During the process, technicians may also inspect internal components and address minor issues if needed.

If you’re unsure which service is right for you, your local ATRA member shop can help. They can inspect your transmission, evaluate the condition of your fluid, and recommend the best course of action.

Many shops also offer a free maintenance log to help you keep track of service intervals and basic inspections—making it easier to stay on top of your vehicle’s long-term health.
